Hi, I bought some very thin old spoons that I think might be coin silver but it is not marked coin. My main question is about the stamp on the back, Woodruff and White. I can’t find any info online about this maker. Anyone familiar with it? Thank you!
Hi Caroline and thanks for joining us. I don’t find anything on that as a maker either so we can presume it is probably a retailer’s mark. It was common years ago for jewelers and department stores to place their mark on silver that they sold.
Regards,
Uncle Vic
Woodruff & White had something to do with Enos Woodruff and George L White of Louisville, KY. They were active from 1829 to 1834.
I am getting this information from “Marks of American Silversmiths” by Belden
