Could anyone please help identify this mark? I think the O means it may be 1888? The makers mark is illegible to me but when upside down it looks like “AY”?

You are right with Birmingham, 1888. I agree that the maker’s mark is almost certainly A.Y but unfortunately not known to me and not shown in any of the standard references. I had a look in a Birmingham Trades Directory for 1890 and there is nobody listed with matching initials in the umbrella or whip mounting trade.
