Hello, im a total noob and need help identifying this. Ive went to a coupl3 sites but all i know its german. The Æ or FE stamp isnt part of the database. I was curious if this was fake or not.
The “crescent and crown” is certainly German standard (since 1888) for silver, at .800 purity and higher, so I think it’s safe to say that this is .925 pure silver. Can’t find the AE mark so far, but that’s not surprising - there’s no official, all-inclusive list of makers, so there are a lot of “unknowns.”
Someone is wants $300 for it. Is that a fair price or an outrageous one?
It looks like it’s a bit of a mess - heavily tarnished, and maybe difficult to polish up. If it weighs anything less than about 400 grams, walk away. At that weight, or higher, it would be worth at least what the spot price of silver would bring (less a scrap dealer’s profit margin). I’m guessing it’s a lot lighter than that.
There’s not much of a collector market for smoking-related items, with the exception of some rarities from well-known makers (like Faberge, Cartier, etc.).
ETA: On eBay, the asking prices of most sterling cigarette cases are less than half that, and many are below $100. And the actual “sold” prices are considerably lower.
Run away!!
