This was passed down to me from my grandfather (born 1901) who mentioned it belonged to his father.
Is it a pencil holder? I have been told it is a wax holder and stamp?
Also would like to identify the hallmarks - date, maker and origin. TIA

Interestingly 2 separate hallmarks here from different parts of the same piece. The first one which appears to be on the cap of this piece is London 1893/94 (date letter S) with the maker’s mark SJ of Samuel Jacob. The other mark which looks as if it is on the body of the piece is also London but has the date letter U for 1895/96 and no obvious maker’s mark. I guess this [something] holder was assembled from off-the-shelf pieces.
I am not sure what exactly its purpose was; I don’t think it’s a wax holder as the ones I have seen have a rectangular cross section for the wax stick. You don’t mention a size - could it be a thermometer case?
