Could anyone Identify these hallmarks?

This is from an old picked watch. We believe made in the Chester Assay office? Possibly 1820 of 18k Gold but any help would be amazing.

Thank you in advance

Hi

Your identification is a bit like the curate’s egg - good in parts. Yes it is 18 carat gold and yes the marks are those of the Chester Assay Office. The watch case was not made in the Assay Office, just assayed (tested for quality) there; and the date letter here is for 1885. I can be sure that this is not one of the other B date letters as the maker’s mark, JD, is that of James Dodsworth of Dodsworth Brothers, watch & watchcase makers of Chesterfield Street, Liverpool, who registered this mark on 11 October 1879.
