hi have a silver sealtop spoon has the London town mark no other marks except scratched into the underside of the bowl is 1634.
Does have someones name but to hard to photograph.
I know genuine sealtops were only produced from late 1500.s to 1600,s but why would it have a date scratched into the bowl and how would they have arrived at that date.Thanks in advance
It may be (and probably is) a 17th century spoon, but without any more of a hallmark it will be near-impossible to prove. I suggest that somebody who has inherited it with oral history/speculation attached has decided to scratch onto the bowl the date which has been passed down. Other explanations may be available…
